The Chennakeshava Temple, originally called Vijayanarayana Temple was built in Belur, by the Hoysala King Vishnuvardhana. Built a temple for Vijaynarayana in 1117 A.D. in commemoration of his victory against the Chola viceroy of Talkad. An inscription on the pedestal of Vijayanarayana image states that the image was caused to be made by King Vishnu. There are many madanikas that depict some form of dance, musical instrument or grooming. One of the most famous madanika is the girl with the mirror.
