Chennakesava Temple01

The Chennakesava Temple, originally called Vijayanarayana Temple was built in Belur, by the Hoysala King Vishnuvardhana. Built a temple for Vijaynarayana in 1117 A.D. in commemoration of his victory against the Chola viceroy of Talkad. An inscription on the pedestal of Vijayanarayana image states that the image was caused to be made by King Vishnu. The image shows Garuda, the vehicle of the Hindu god Vishnu facing the Chennakeshava temple.
